HENAN · SONGSHAN FIELD NOTE
Old Cypresses & Stone Steps: A Slow Return
At Shaolin on Songshan, move from temple courtyards to the Pagoda Forest and mountain paths, letting footsteps replace a hurried arrival.

Songshan rises near Dengfeng in Henan and holds a rich collection of religious and historic architecture. The Shaolin area connects the Shaolin Temple compound, the Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Nunnery, Bodhidharma Cave, and Sanhuangzhai through courtyards, stone towers, and mountain paths.
This field note does not treat Shaolin as a checklist. Begin with half a day for the temple and Pagoda Forest; only if your energy, the weather, and on-site conditions allow should Sanhuangzhai become a separate extension of the day.
